The Child Development program is designed to prepare students for employment in preschool programs. Emphasis is upon developing competency in guiding the experiences of preschool children. Graduates may be employed as teacher assistants in public kindergartens, as teachers or directors in private preschool programs, and as Head Start teachers or teacher assistants. Students may choose between a certificate, AAS or AS programs of study.
PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
Applicants Must:
- Meet all the general admission requirements of WSCC.
- Submit a WSCC application to the Admissions office, declaring Child Development as major. Students are accepted each semester.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale on all previous high school and college work attempted.
- Arrange for an orientation interview with the Child Development Program Director. Call 256 352-8334 for an interview appointment.

ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE (A.S.) CURRICULUM
The A.S. Curriculum is designed for individuals who wish to complete the first two years of a four year program and who plan to continue their education to earn a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education at Athens State. Students must consult the STARS program to insure transfer of all elective courses. This transfer degree may not be recognized by Head Start.
