Scholarship Information
The Wallace State College Athletic Department provides financial support to our cheerleading program. We currently offer two levels of scholarships. Our full scholarship covers tuition, books, and fees. Our full athletic scholarships cover tuition, books, and fees. Our full tuition scholarships cover tuition only. Though the exact number of scholarships varies from year to year, this year the college awarded 10 full athletic and two full tuition. We were also able to award several partial scholarships. These are based on scores, need, and availability.
Additional Cost: WSCC provides cheerleaders with all uniforms and assists with travel expenses, practice clothing, camp cost, competition fees, and most other items required to fulfill their duties and perform at their best.
Academics First: Wallace State College provides tutors upon request to student-athletes in need. We also monitor each cheerleader's grades and will intervene when necessary. The student-athletes will receive assistance with scheduling difficulties and are excused from class during required athletic events.
At Wallace State College we are fortunate to have access to exceptional facilities. We have a practice room with mirrored walls and a full competition floor. We also have use of the weight room, training rooms, and video facilities.
Cheer Tryout Procedure
The main purpose of the tryout is to select the best overall representatives for Wallace State College. This factor, as well as demonstrated technical skills, aids the coach in choosing the best all-around members for the team. During the mandatory tryout clinic, the coach may make cuts, with the assistance of experience judges, until the final squad is selected.
The format of the tryout is that of a clinic where a progression of skills are taught by the coach and former WSCC cheerleaders. Participants are then given ample time and opportunity to practice and demonstrate the skills before cuts are made.
Although the required skills may vary from year to year, there are some requirements which are standard. Tumbling skills are a standing back handspring, standing back tuck, back handspring -back tuck, and a tumbling pass (three tricks or more). Stunt skill requirements are based upon past team members' abilities and overall talent level of participants. A toss extension, toss shoulder stand, and toss lib will be required, as well as a toss heel stretch with a full-down cradle.
2007 Tryouts
Wallace State Cheerleading tryouts will be held Saturday, March 31 2007. Tuesday, March 27 through Friday, March 30 there will be instructional clinics for tryouts. Clinics are for the benefits of those who are trying out for the team. Although it is not mandatory to make it to every night, a candidate must attend at least two nights. Cuts will be made through out the clinics based on abilities and progress. Clinics will start at 5:00 and will be held in the Wellness Center, room 102. Clinics are closed to the public.
For tryouts, you should wear a collared sports shirt (polo style) and shorts any combination of blue, orange, and white. The shirt or shorts should not have any school or gym name on them. Tryouts are closed to the public.
A cheer, sideline and/or chant, and stunts will be taught on the first night of the clinic. The stunt requirements are toss lib, toss extension, toss to shoulders, toss heel stretch with a full down cradle, and one optional stunt. Each person is allowed to tryout with the person of their choice as long as that person is also trying out for cheerleader at Wallace State. The other requirement to make the WSCC Cheerleading Squad is tumbling – a minimal of a standing-back tuck.
To try out, a student must be in good academic standing. A high school senior must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA. A candidate must be enrolled at Wallace State-Hanceville or have an application for admissions on file. An official copy of his/her transcript must also be on file in the admissions on / before March 26, 2007. Proof of insurance coverage (copy of parents' insurance card) is also needed. If the student is under the age of 19, a parental signature is required on the application form.
