About Your Browser
If you're taking an internet course for the first time or if you've never taken a course on the WebCT platform, you may find this information and links helpful.
- A good basic tutorial for WebCT. This is the WebCT's student orientation page.
- Another important page is the Browser Tune up page. This page has lots of information about how your computer and its software, particularly your Internet browser, should be set up. New browsers can be downloaded from this site. At Wallace State we are using version 4.1 of WebCT.
- Note that some versions of AOL are not supported. If you have AOL it is usually best to sign on, close open windows and launch another browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) to do your work. It's a good idea to make your login page that browser's home page. That way you don't have to type in the URL every time.
- NOTE! It is very important to disable any "pop-up" blocking software such as "Popper Stopper." WebCT depends on pop up windows to work properly.
- If your course requires written assignments you need to submit them in HTML format, the standard file format of the internet. Launch your word processor and go to the "save" dialogue box. Change the file format to html. Html may be described as "WWW," "web page," ".htm" or ".html. The file name will have the suffix of .htm (Windows) or .html (Macintosh). Please use lower case with no spaces for the file name. Other files that can be read include RTF and Microsoft Word. If your instructor requires assignments be sure to send them in a format that can be read.
If your computer and browser will reliably connect to the Internet and open web pages without problems, you should be able to participate in an online course. If you are taking courses on campus you may also access the internet in computer labs located in the computer science building, the library, the dental building and others.
