Cultural Arts Week Swings Into Spring
HANCEVILLE, Ala.-The Wallace State Music Department presented "Swing into Spring" on Friday night, the sixth event of the college's Cultural Arts Week series. The dining and dancing extravaganza featured big band music by the Wallace State Jazz Show Band.
The Jazz Band, directed by Robert Bean, played three sets and approximately 30 songs for dances of all variations, including the cha cha, mambo, foxtrot, rhumba, samba, tango, waltz and swing.
More than 200 were in attendance, and the dance floor filled with each tune. There was a dance for everyone, even a line dance to Boot Scootin' Boogie, which the band performed with Wallace State voice instructor and soloist Tiffany Richter.
Funds raised from the event will go to support the Wallace State Jazz Band's spring tour.
Earlier this week, the Music Department hosted an opera performance on Monday, and a master class and open rehearsal for the Wallace State choirs with visiting faculty from Texas State University on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the theater department presented "Clue." Thursday featured English Department guest Kathryn Tucker Windham.
Cultural Arts Week continues on Saturday, when the Wallace State art department presents a juried visual art exhibition in the James C. Bailey Center foyer from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. The art exhibition will be open for public viewing April 10-14.
To close out the week, the Wallace State concert choir will perform its spring tour bon voyage concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the music department's recital hall for a $5 donation. The group will perform Franz Josef Haydn's "Missa Sancti Johannes de Deo: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs."
