Wallace State Takes Game One at Marion
Marion, Ala.--The Wallace State-Hanceville baseball team defeated Marion Military Institute 14-4 on Friday in the first game of a three-game conference series that continues at Marion on Saturday.
Jamie Manning (6-2) threw for the first six innings of the nine-inning game to secure the win for the Lions. He gave up four runs on six hits, struck out seven batters and walked two.
Pitching in relief, Jorge Williams allowed one hit and struck out three batters in two innings. Zelous Wheeler closed the game with a one-hit inning in which he struck out three.
Wheeler also provided the Lions' with power at the plate. His 3-for-3 batting performance included a two-run home run, a double and five runs.
Several other Lions had multiple hits. Chase McCain went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Jake Elmore, who led the Alabama Community College Conference North Division with a batting average of .442 going into Friday's game, was 3-for-5 at bat against Marion with a solo home run, double, stolen base and two runs. Chaise Oliver was 3-for-6 with three runs and a RBI, his 51st of the season, which also leads the division.
Bill Henke was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Damien Mazzetti added two runs with a hit and a RBI. Chris Hoffer also scored.
Wallace State (33-9, 17-5 ACCC) has two conference match-ups remaining. Following their doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, they will play three games at Gadsden State next weekend and close the season at home May 5 and 6 versus Calhoun.
