Lions' Baseball Dominates in Three Game Sweep of Gadsden State
GADSDEN, Ala.-- The Wallace State-Hanceville baseball team's bats came alive in their conference series at Gadsden State this weekend. The Lions defeated Gadsden 14-1, 10-2 and 5-4 and extended their current winning streak to 11 games.
Derek Holland (8-2) was the winning pitcher for Wallace in the opening nine-inning game. He struck out seven batters in five innings and allowed only two hits to the 16 batters he faced.
At the plate for the Lions, Damien Mazzetti hit 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, two runs and a RBI. Jono Waugh hit 2-of-4 with a home run, single, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Chase McCain swung for a double and a single in his four at bats. He also recorded two runs and two RBIs. Zealous Wheeler connected for a double and scored two additional runs.
Logan Eads hit a single, scored a run and picked up a RBI. Jake Elmore added two RBIs after hitting a triple. Elmore also scored a run for the Lions.
Wallace came out strong in the first game on Saturday and Craig Kimbrell (8-0) led the way on the mound as he picked up the victory for the Lions.
Mazzetti came out swinging and hit 3-for-4 with two home runs and a single. He also scored two runs and picked up three RBIs for the Lions. Elmore swung for a double and a single in his five at bats. He also scored a run.
McCain also hit a home run and scored a run while picking up three RBIs, and Josh McGinnis hit two doubles for the Lions. Chaise Oliver added two singles and scored two runs, and Waugh connected for two singles and scored a run while picking up an RBI.
Zealous Wheeler went 2-for-2 with a double and single. He also scored two runs and had two RBIs.
The third game was a close one. Jamie Manning (7-2) led Wallace State to the win. He pitched six innings and faced 25 batters while striking out three.
McCain connected for a home run and a single after going 2-for-3 at the plate. He scored two runs and had an RBI. Elmore hit 2-for-2 with a triple, a single and a run scored.
Waugh had a home run and a RBI in his at bats. Waugh also scored a run, and Oliver had a single and a RBI. Bill Henke added another single and RBI, while Hoffer also singled. Wheeler swung for a home run and scored a run while picking up an RBI.
Wallace (38-5, 22-5 ACCC) will finish the season at home on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5 with a three-game conference series against Calhoun Community College. Friday's game will begin at 6 p.m., and Saturday's double header is set for 3 and 5 p.m.
