Lions' Baseball Looks for No. 1 Seed against Calhoun
HANCEVILLE, Ala.- The Wallace State-Hanceville baseball team wraps up the regular season at home this weekend against Calhoun Community College. The Lions (38-9, 22-5 ACCC) will look to sweep Calhoun take the top seed heading in the state tournament.
"We have had a great season up to this point," head baseball coach Randy Putman said. "The guys have really played well, and we are looking to get 40 wins in the regular season for the first time since 1992. That is a big accomplishment for a team with as many freshmen as we have."
The Lions' bats have had no trouble connecting with the ball this season. Wallace leads the state in home runs with 59. They are also ranked first in the division in doubles per game with 2.5, home runs per game with 1.3 and runs scored per game with 9.1. The Lions also average 8.2 RBIs per game and lead the division in that statistic.
Putman said, "I have really been impressed with the team's efforts overall. All the aspects of our game from offense to defense to pitching seem to be coming together. Our starting pitching has been excellent for us and our defense is really doing well after some changes we made. Obviously, our offense is also doing well. We are hitting .360 as a team and several guys have really stepped up and hit well for us."
"Several guys have really performed well for us all season and have stepped up when we needed it," Putman said. "Jake Elmore is leading the division in hits, and Craig Kimbrell has really stepped up on the mound for us and is leading the division in strike outs. Also, Jono Waugh is third in stolen bases, and Chaise Oliver is second in RBIs."
Jake Elmore at bat for Wallace State this season. Elmore leads the ACCC Northern Division with a .457 batting average.
Elmore has the top spot in the division with a .457 batting average, while Oliver averages 1.3 RBIs per game. Kimbrell averages 13.4 strike outs per game for the Lions, and Waugh is number three for the Lions in the division in stolen bases per game as he averages .86 stolen bases per game.
The Lions are looking to extend a 12 game winning streak and move past Shelton State to grab the number one seed for the state tournament. "If we continue our current level of play we've got a really good chance to go into the state tournament with the top seed," Putman said. "As it is every year, our goal is to make it to the World Series in Grand Junction. We have to play well and take care of business."
