Lady Lions' Softball Ready for State Tournament

HANCEVILLE, Ala.--After completing a successful regular season last
Friday, the Wallace State-Hanceville softball team will head to the
Alabama Community College Conference in Alabaster this weekend. The
tournament will be held at Veteran's Park May 5-8.

"We've had a great regular season, and now we're ready to continue in
post-season play," softball head coach Jayne Clem said. "We are a very
young team with only three sophomores, but the girls have stepped up to
the level of competition."

The ACCC Tournament features the 13 best teams in the state in a double
elimination competition. Wallace State goes into the tournament with the
best record in the northern division at 59-9, 13-3 in the ACCC.

Jayne Clem coaches third base during a game at
Wallace State this season.

The Lady Lions wrapped up the regular season with a 13-game winning
streak and will look to the tournament with confidence. "We had some let
downs during the season against some teams we shouldn't have lost to,
but the girls have learned from the losses. They understand they have to
play 100 percent every game, and the wins late in the season have helped
them mentally prepare for the tournament."

"The sophomores have helped keep us together this season. The team has
really come together well at the end of the regular season," Clem said.

The Lady Lions set several teams goals before the season began and
worked hard to accomplish them.

"We always set goals for the team before each season, and we were able
to accomplish them. I wanted us to have a 50 win season, and we have
that. We wanted to win the division as well, which we did," Clem said.
"Our batting average is very good, and our pitchers have kept the ERA we
wanted. We were hoping to have an ERA of one or less, and we ended the
season at 1.02, so we were very happy about that."

Wallace State will head to Alabaster on Saturday. Clem said she is a bit
nervous about the tournament, but she believes her team will play their
best. "I have confidence that we will be the best team at the
tournament, but we have to make sure that we bring our best effort to
each game. We can't get over confident or lose focus. We have to play
one game at a time."

The Lady Lions' received a first round bye. Their opening game will take
place at 4 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of Gadsden State versus
Faulkner State. The winner of that game will play on Sunday at 4 p.m. If
the Lady Lions remain in the winner's bracket they will play on Monday
at 2 p.m. in the semi-final round and on Tuesday at 11 a.m. for the
championship.

The winner of the tournament will head to the NJCAA tournament in Plant
City, Fla.
