Wallace State Baseball's Wheeler Signs with UAB
HANCEVILLE, Ala.-- The Wallace State-Hanceville baseball team sent yet another player to a four-year institution when Lions' third baseman Zelous Wheeler signed with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers.
Wheeler's signing comes on the heels of his teammates commitments to other Universities. Pitcher Jamie Manning signed with the University of Alabama, while Derek Holland and Jake Elmore are headed to Arizona State University to continue their academic and athletic careers.
Wheeler, of Childersburg, will be playing third base for the Blazers. He follows former Wallace State pitcher Rodney Wodson who joined the UAB team last year.
"Zelous is a great player and person. I have no doubt that he will excel at UAB just as he did with Wallace for two years," Lions head baseball coach Randy Putman said. "He was an excellent all around player. He is good on the field and excels at the plate as well. He is a great pick for the Blazers."

Wheeler carries a .407 batting average and .689 slugging percentage this season. He's hit nine home runs and delivered 47 RBIs. In the field, his home is at third base but he's also spent time at shortstop and on the mound for the Lions. In Wallace State's recent conference game against Gadsden, he earned a save.
