Wallace State Choir Takes Show on the Road
HANCEVILLE, Ala.--After a foot-stomping, good-time tour, the Wallace State Singers and Concert Choir are back home.
Approximately 40 students traveled to Texas and Louisiana on this year's trip performing at several different locations along the way.
A performance and educational experience, the annual tour allows students to become accustomed to performing in a variety of venues as well as to be exposed to different types of cultures and musical performances, said Tiffany Richter, choir co-director.
The group started in Dallas where it saw a performance of "Wicked" and visited the Sixth Floor Museum.
"I didn't know what to expect," Mike Sparks said of the museum located in the former Texas School Book Depository where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. "But it was outstanding, and anyone who goes to Dallas shouldn't miss it."
After a performance in Dallas, the group traveled to San Marcos, Texas, where it performed with the Texas State choral department and watched a performance by the TSU's Vocalibre.
"We extended our new-found friendships with the students and faculty at Texas State," said Sparks, choir co-director.
"It was good to solidify that relationship we have the Texas State now," Richter added. "Especially since some of their faculty members were kind enough to teach here during Cultural Arts Week."
The group next performed at the First Protestant Church of New Braunfels, the oldest protestant church in the town's city limits. From there, the students performed at the Arneson Theater on San Antonio's RiverWalk, where the movie "Miss Congeniality" was filmed.
The group listened and danced to Cajun music in Baton Rouge, La., on its way back home before one last performance in the Washington Artillery in New Orleans' French Quarter.
"The trip provided a unique and fresh set of opportunities for performance, education, and experiencing another culture," Sparks said. "I felt that the performances were all great, and having a chance to see a professional performance of what is arguably the best musical of the last 20 years ("Wicked"), as well as hearing and performing with the Texas State choirs were wonderful."
For next year's tour, Sparks is working on an application to do a choral prelude for a Sunday service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
"This is one of the most sought after opportunities for a choir in the United States and, if we get it, it'll be something they'll always remember," Sparks said. "We'll have to learn a 25 minute, all sacred, all a cappella program. It'll be tough, but I'm sure we can do it."
