Wallace State Track Finishes Strong at Nationals

COFFEYVILLE, Kan- The Wallace State-Hanceville track team wrapped up
their season with a 12th place finish at the NJCAA Championships this
past weekend. The team had several individual top 10 finishes and six
All-American selections.

"All things considered, we had a good meet," said Wallace State coach
Stan Narewski.

"The big surprise came from the 4x100 meter relay," he said. "We didn't
expect to make it to the finals but with good exchanges we did and went
on to finish fourth."

The Wallace State 4x100 meter relay team of Dante Harrell, Chavis
Sibert, Everette Foxx and Antoine Fant combined for a time of 41.55. All
four received All-American honors.

Antoine Fant took the third place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time
of 14.38 and was subsequently named All-American in that event as well.

Thuom Mathiang and Michael Chapa each recorded top 10 finishes in the
800-meter and 1500-meter runs, respectively. Mathiang ran his way to the
sixth place spot and an All-American selection in the 800 with a time of
1:53.01. Chapa took seventh place in the 1500-meter run with a time of
3:56.99. Chapa also ran in the 5,000-meter event for Wallace and
finished with a time of 16:02.59 minutes and a 15th place finish.

"Our luck did not hold out on the 4x400 relay where a bad exchange took
us from being in the hunt for a win to seventh," said Narewski.

The Wallace State 4x400 meter relay team, comprised of Glenn Fowler,
Kevin Adams, Fant and Mathiang finished with the seventh place time of
3:17.88.

David Lowry threw the javelin for 46.14 meters to take 13th place in
that event.

"Glenn Fowler had the bad break of the meet," said Narewski. "He was the
favorite to win the 400 hurdles and fell after hitting the seventh
hurdle. Being the athlete and person he is, Glenn got up and finished
the race, in spite of being skinned up from head to toe."

After the summer break, Wallace State cross country will begin in the
fall. Track and field resumes in January.
