Mode: Process (Chapter 15, page 221)
The three basic forms of process writing include describing a process, explaining a process, and giving instructions (text page 221). Your goal is to analyze a process and break it into specific steps. You must show how each step leads logically to the next and how all the steps together complete the process. You may do a directional process that shows how something is or was made or an informative process that shows how something works. A good main idea sentence for a directions paper will include two things: what the directions will cover and the most important thing readers need or have to do in order to follow the directions.
Purpose: To inform, explain, or give directions
Person: Second person (you) or third person (they, he, she, it)
Length: 5 paragraphs, 4-8 sentences per paragraph—vary sentence structure (see page 650 for sample sentence structures).
Organization: Chronological
Tense: Be consistent in your use of verb tense. Process papers usually use present tense verbs. If you begin with present tense, continue in present tense.
