WSCC Baseball No. 7 seed at ACCC/NJCAA South District Division I baseball tournament
Hanceville, AL — Wallace State Community College’s baseball team will play in the Alabama Community College Conference/National Junior College Athletic Association South District Division I baseball tournament starting May 9 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, AL. The Lions will face No. 2 seeded Delgado Community College out of New Orleans, La., at 2 p.m.
Wallace State enters the tournament as the No. 7 seed, keeping a postseason streak alive for Coach Randy Putman, who has led the Lions to the conference tournament every season that he has coached at Wallace State except for the COVID year and 2011, when the last six games of the season had to be canceled following the tornado that struck campus and the community.
The Lions have had a number of players in the disabled list this season. They enter the tournament with an even record against conference competition.
Offensively, the team has scored a total of 258 runs throughout the season, with a batting average of .285. Their on-base percentage stands at .380, and their slugging percentage at .416. They have total of 39 home runs for the season.
On the pitcher’s mound, Luke Fernandez has stood out this season as a leader in strikeouts across the conference. A freshman from Cummings, Ga., Fernandez is at the top of the leaderboard with 94 strikeouts.
For the Lions, freshman Connor Cosby of Auburn leads the team with runs (33), hits (52), home runs (10) and stolen bases (13). He has 25 RBI with a batting average of .287 and slugging percentage of .582.
Freshman Colten Payton of Huntsville leads the team with 36 RBI and has recorded 30 runs this season and six home runs. He has a .302 batting average and .488 slugging percentage.
Sophomores Tucker Burns and Jake Fernandez also performed well this season. Burns, of Huntsville, scored 25 runs, had 51 hits and 22 RBI. Jake Fernandez, of Cummings, Ga., scored 23 runs, had 47 hits and 33 RBI.

Choccolocco Park is located at 954 Leon Smith Parkway in Oxford. General admission to the tournament is $15 per day or a $50 Tournament Pass is available. Children under six, scouts/four-year coaches with ID, ACCC member with ID are admitted free of charge. Daily parking is $5.
