RESOLUTION BY THE ALABAMA STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION

Adopted December 9, 2004

WHEREAS, Mary Evelyn Burrow, known also as Evelyn Burrow, a noted Cullman County entrepreneur for many years, and one of the most successful pioneering women professionals in Alabama during her career; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow and her husband Ottis were instrumental in working with Governor George Wallace to establish a trade school in Cullman County which is now Wallace State Community College; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow has made monetary contributions to Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and contributions of art to the First Baptist Church in Cullman, Alabama, and to the Twelfth Street Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn and Ottis Burrow owned the Palomino Hotel in Cullman, Alabama, and the Holiday Inn in Good Hope, Alabama, a top 10 Holiday Inn worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow traveled the world extensively to add to her rare collection of Dresden, Majolica, Capo DiMonte, and Meissen porcelain, Remington sculptures, Faberge eggs, Tiffany lamps, and Marshall Mitchell sculptures to name a few; and her collection contains rare works from Greece, Israel, Africa, Austria, Switzerland, Egypt, Germany, Italy, France, Liechtenstein, Canada, Turkey; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow has always been civic minded throughout her lifetime and has served many clubs such as the Quest Club of Cullman, Emblem Club, Beta Sigma Phi, all the Garden clubs of Cullman, and has been president of the clubs more times than she can remember; and

WHEREAS, in November of 2004, because of her belief in the importance of education of the arts, Evelyn Burrow announced a gift of her beloved museum collection she established at the North Alabama Museum of History and Fine Arts, Inc., with an appraised value of $ 5.5 million to Wallace State Community College - Hanceville, the largest single donation ever made to the college; and

WHEREAS, Wallace State Community College-Hanceville has been approved to construct a building containing a museum and requests the museum complex be named the Evelyn Burrow Museum; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow is donating $1,000,000 by Irrevocable Charitable Remainder Trust to Wallace State Community College - Hanceville to advance the College’s mission and in support of the cultural arts in Cullman County and the state of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Wallace State Community College - Hanceville requests to honor Mr. and Mrs. Burrow’s significant lives and contributions to this community and to Wallace State Community College - Hanceville by naming the Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Burrow continues to support numerous groups and individuals. She plans to give much of her time to help the Museum and the Fine and Performing Arts Center for the rest of her life; and

WHEREAS, the Chancellor of Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education recommends this action; and

Now, therefore, be it resolved, That the Alabama State Board of Education hereby recognizes and honors Evelyn Burrow for her benevolent contributions to the people of Alabama and to Wallace State Community College; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the State Board of Education hereby commends Evelyn Burrow for her outstanding leadership, determination, and commitment in providing educational opportunities to Wallace State Community College - Hanceville, to the Alabama College System, and to the State of Alabama.
