COMPASS Assessments Preparation

   The COMPASS placement assessment is:

  • Used to measure a student's readiness for college-level courses;
  • A computerized assessment of skills in Math, Reading, and Writing;
  • A tool we use to help enroll students in the class which corresponds to individual skill levels.

You are exempt from taking the assessments IF . . .

  • You have taken the ACT exam and scored a 20 or higher in the individual areas of Math or English OR you have taken the SAT and scored at least 480 on the Verbal or 480 on the Math AND you are enrolling within 3 years of high school graduation;
  • You already have an Associate degree or higher;
  • You are gransferring college-level English and Math courses with a grade of "C" or higher;
  • You are a senior citizen;
  • You are not seeking a degree or are taking classes for vocational reasons only;
  • You are in a short certificate program having no English or Math requirement;
  • You have completed required developmental coursework at another Alabama College System institution with the last 3 years;
  • You are an audit student;
  • You can provide documentation of assessment (COMPASS or ASSET) within the last 3 years;
  • You are a transient student.

How to Prepare for the Assessments

   The Tutoring Lab, located in the Learning Success Center (TBH 7th Floor) has practice materials available for student use.  You may also download these materials at www.act.org/compass/sample/.

   Students may also practice for the COMPASS using free assessment quizzes at the following website: www.testprepreview.com/compass_practice.htm

   The Computer Lab located in the Learing Success Center also has self-guided tutorials available for preparation.  To use these programs, you must be prepared to spend several hours practicing in the lab and make an assessment appointment with the lab coordinator.  For more information about these materials contact Virginia Barber at 256 352-8079 or Virginia.Barber@WallaceState.edu.
