I. Types of WebCT Users
System Administrator
The System administrator (in relation to WebCT services) is responsible for:
- initial setup and maintenance of the WebCT Server, including disk space, hardware, operating system, and network connectivity; and
- system backups and file restoration.
System Administration is performed by personnel in Administrative Computing
WebCT Administrator
WebCT Administrators are responsible for:
- creating course shells;
- removing courses from the server;
- adding and removing designers, students, and teaching assistants to the global database;
- modifying instructor passwords;
- modifying user information;
- controlling whether students and instructional assistants can add their own records to the global database;
- selecting settings that affect all courses (e.g., backup limit, student names, student homepages, and course colour);
- adding and removing designers, students, and instructional assistants to courses
- adding help desk users and assigning their level of authority; and
- controlling server settings.
WebCT Administration is performed by personnel in Administrative Computing.
Instructor WebCT Support
Instructor support is provided by the WebCT administrator.
Student WebCT Support
WebCT Student Support is provided by the WebCT administrator for:
- modifying passwords,
- modifying user information, and
- providing support to student users.
These services are provided by Administrative Computing.
Designers / Instructors
WebCT Designers / Instructors are responsible for:
- adding course content such as quizzes, content modules, and assignments;
- grading assignments and quizzes;
- setting page, text, and link color;
- adding and removing students from courses; and
- changing frame colors.
Instructional Assistants
Instructional Assistants may:
- grade assignments and quizzes,
- change student grades, and
- exercise the same privileges as students (see below)
Students
All WebCT students may:
- view course content, take quizzes, submit assignments, post mail messages and discussion topics, etc.
- If permitted by instructors, manipulate content in Student Presentation areas.
