Wallace State Wellness Program Mission
 

 

   The purpose of the WSC Wellness Program is to engage individuals in behaviors that develop optimal health and fitness and thereby enhance quality of life. A major focus of the program is physical fitness. Fitness involves the ability to carry out daily tasks, develop cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strength, maintenance of proper nutrition, and proper body fat control. Students are encouraged to invest in positive lifestyle habits to promote health. Social and emotional health are enhanced by interaction with peers and intellectual abilities are simulated through educational seminars and courses.

   Wellness Center Facilities

   The WSC Wellness Center opened in the fall of 1992. Physical Education, Sports Medicine and Wellness Programs are housed in The Wellness Center. In 1996 an expansion to the original building was completed. The present facilities include:

   Classrooms   Two on the first floor and one large classroom on the second floor. Aerobics Room - a large mirrored room that is equipped with a sound system, exercise mats, and a large variety of hand weights provides space for aerobics, dance, and slimnastics classes.
 
   Racquetball Courts      Four courts for racquetball, two courts for wallyball, and a central area for observation.
 
   Gymnasiums   Two gyms are located in the back of the center. One is a basketball gym that can also be used for volleyball. The other gym is a multi-use area which may be used for badminton (two courts), volleyball (two courts), and tennis. Both gyms include a walking track (1/16 mile).
 
   Assessment Rooms   Two assessment rooms are located near the weight room for analysis of body fat, measurements, and weight.
 
   Locker Rooms   Provide shower facilities, lockers, and saunas.
 
   Demonstration Kitchen   Provides classroom space for cooking demonstrations, educational seminars, and support group meetings.
 
   Weight Room   The spacious 7000 foot room is well equipped for weight training and cardiorespiratory training. Equipment housed in the weight room includes: 10 treadmills, 8 cycles, 3 steppers, 1 skate machine, 1 skywalker, 18 free weight stations, and 26 Nautilus machines.
 
   Stretch Room   A large carpeted area provides space for group stretching, toning, and floor work.

 

    Enrollment in Programs

   Exercise Classes for Academic Credit - Students may enroll in any of the exercise classes/PED for academic credit. Most classes are 1 credit hour.

   Heart Link and Special Needs Classes - With a physician's referral, students may enroll during regular registration or any time during the semester. Tuition varies related to enrollment date.

   Continuing Education / Non College Credit Exercise Class - Students who miss regular registration and wish to enroll during the semester may start in the program. Students will need to see an advisor at The Wellness Center to complete the registration form and will then complete the registration process at the admissions office in the Bailey Center. Regular tuition and fees will apply. The senior adult tuition waiver does not apply to a Continuing Education Class (CEU Class).

Six views of some of the equipment in the Wellness Center available for use.    Senior Adult Tuition Waiver - Adults 60 years of age and older who have a high school diploma or GED will qualify for reduced tuition per class (course number). A specific course may only be taken one time. Senior adults without a high school diploma or GED are not eligible for senior tuition waiver. Senior Adults with no high school diploma will pay per credit hour taken.

 

    Description of Programs

   Senior Adult Program - Is provided for healthy senior adults to participate in structured group exercise classes and group sports activities. Special events, competitions, and exercise provide a well rounded program for fitness, fun, and social interaction for senior adults.

Check out the equipment available.   Special Needs Program - Caters to people with a wide range of medical conditions. The purpose of this program is to provide individual supervision and monitoring for people who require it in order to participate in physical activity. The program also provides education and a personalized exercise prescription that will allow each participant to reach their own optimal fitness level. A physician's referral is required for all participants.

   Heart Link Program - Is designed to reduce the risk factors for heart disease and restore the health of individuals diagnosed with heart disease. A program of education and exercise allows participants to progress to their own optimal level of wellness. Education provides information to assist individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices, and a carefully supervised exercise program builds flexibility, strength, and endurance. A physician's referral is required for all participants.

   Weight Control Program/Support Group - Meets on a regular basis to provide information on nutrition, healthy eating habits, cooking tips/recipes, and effective weight loss. Students already enrolled in an exercise program/class may participate in this program.

   Physical Education Classes for Academic Credit - Include weight training, general conditioning, aerobics, dance classes, racquetball, tennis, jogging/walking, and slimnastics as well as many other classes. They are listed in the Wallace State Statesman Schedule available before each semester.
