Wallace State women’s golf wins 3rd consecutive tournament; WSCC basketball teams have seasons end in ACCC quarterfinals

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s women’s golf team won its third straight tournament title this spring, cruising in the Wallace State Spring Invite at Cross Creek Golf Course this week, and sophomore Lauren Cole her low medalist title in as many tournaments.

The Lady Lions won the two-day event by 46 strokes.

Cole, a Glencoe native, carded a 10-over par 154, winning the tournament by five strokes. Cole has won five individual titles in her Wallace State career.

Wallace State sophomore Maddie Nelson and freshman Hannah Sanders each made the All-Tournament team to complement Cole. Nelson was third with a 17-over 161, and Hannah Sanders finished with a 167.

Carly Havens and Abigail Baker rounded out the field for the Lady Lions.

Wallace State’s women have also won tournaments this spring, hosted by Calhoun and Northeast Alabama.

Wallace State will seek its fourth straight ACCC Tournament championship on April 15-16 at Guntersville’s Eagle’s Nest Golf Course.

Wallace State men’s basketball

Both Wallace State basketball teams had their seasons end earlier this week.

The Wallace State men, seeded fourth in the ACCC North, battled Wallace Community College-Selma throughout, but struggled to score over the final 3:15, losing 63-60 at Shelton State’s Umphrey Center.

Jevon Laidler paced Wallace State with 17 points and eight rebounds, Kuran Garner scored 16 and Rafael Jenkins finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Wallace State played without injured contributors Miguel Miranda and Tyler Hutchieson.

Neither team maintained a double-digit lead.

Wallace State held a slight 31-29 edge at the break and sustained a four-point lead with 12:12 to go.

Both teams traded leads over the next nine minutes. The Patriots hit one free throw with 3:15 to go, for a 59-58 advantage, and never trailed again.

Garner, a sophomore from Huntsville, led the Lions in scoring this season with 15.9 points per game. Miranda added 14.3 points per contest.

Freshman Cole Maddox, a Good Hope grad, was third on the team with 9.6 points per game.

Miranda was first on the team in rebounding and Jenkins in assists.

Garner, Laidler, Hutchieson, Jenkins, Chris Gregroy, Jahvon Sims and Zion Fluellen made up the sophomore class this season.

Wallace State finished 11-12 in coach Allen Sharpe’s return to the program.

Sophomore Jiselle Woodson poured in 24 points in her final game with the Lady Lions and Olivia Howard added 15 points and six rebounds as Wallace State lost to Chattahoochee Valley in the ACCC Tournament quarterfinals in Tuscaloosa this week.

Like the men’s team, the fourth-seeded Lady Lions nearly pulled the upset against the top-seeded Lady Pirates.

Wallace State led 36-29 at the break. Chattahoochee Valley used a strong third-quarter surge to seize a 50-47 advantage after three quarters.

The Lady Pirates pulled away in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.

Tatyanna Davis finished with eight points and five rebounds for Wallace State and Payton Golden had seven points and five assists.

Wallace State closes the season at 12-7, advancing to the postseason for the fourth straight season under coach Jessica McBrayer.

Woodson, Howard, Emrey McGill, Savannah McConnell and Makyia Broughton were the sophomores on the 2020-2021 team.
