Alexis Williams, Murl Sims named Wallace State’s All-Alabama Academic Team Scholars recipients
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State students Alexis Williams and Murl Sims are Wallace
State Community College’s 2021 All-Alabama Academic Team Scholars.
Both Williams and Sims are Danville High graduates. Williams lives in Hartselle and
Sims in Danville.
The All-Alabama Academic Team recognition program was founded in 1995 to complement
the All-USA Academic Team Program sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
and the American Association of Community Colleges. The All-Alabama Academic Team
Foundation conducts the annual banquet in association with the ACCS and the Phi Theta
Kappa Honor Society.
All-Alabama Academic Team recipients were recognized recently through a virtual ceremony
by Alabama Community College System Chancellor Jimmy Baker, replacing the traditional
luncheon banquet for each honoree.
Williams, a general studies major and a first-generation student, has maintained a
4.0 GPA at Wallace State. She plans to transfer to the University of Alabama to pursue
a degree in political science and ultimately serve as a civil rights attorney.
“I’m very humbled and excited to be selected as one of Wallace State’s recipients.
I began at Wallace State as a dual enrollment student and have grown so much. It’s
an honor to earn this,” Williams said. “I came from humble beginnings. I want to be
an example to the next generation of students who are first-generation, particularly
those of color. It motivates me to accomplish more.”
Williams is also a member of Wallace State’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the
National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), a new honor society the college
has joined.
Sims is a Wallace State Engineering Technology student and will complete his degree
at the conclusion of the summer semester. He plans to transfer to UAH and major in
structural engineering.
“Being selected as one of Wallace State’s All-Alabama representatives is something
I’ll cherish forever. There’s great competition across this campus,” Sims said.
Sims, who has maintained a 3.7 GPA, is also a member of PTK.
As All-Alabama Academic Team Scholars, Williams and Sims both receive a $1,000 transfer
scholarship.
While eligible students from across the entire student body may apply for selection
to the All-USA and All-Alabama Academic Team, all students submit applications to
their local community college’s Phi Theta Kappa nominator. Applicants must have a
minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours in the semester.
