Applications opening for Nursing, EMS and Child Development programs

Hanceville, AL —The application process for several Health Science programs at Wallace State Community College is opening for admission in the Spring 2024 semester. Spring 2024 classes are scheduled to begin Jan. 8, 2024.

 

Nursing

The Wallace State Department of Nursing Education will accept applications from July 1-Oct. 1 for entry into the traditional associate degree or certificate program as well as the joint enrollment option with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which allows students to concurrently complete both an associate degree and bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

The department is hosting information sessions July 24, Aug. 28 and Sept. 18 for anyone interested in applying to the program. Students can visit www.wallacestate.edu/nursing to register to attend an information session, access application instructions and other information.

 

Emergency Medical Services

The Emergency Medical Services program will accept applications for its Basic EMT and Advanced EMT options starting Aug. 1. The Basic EMT short-term certificate option can be completed in one semester. Those completing the Basic EMT and earning certification or those who currently have certification can complete one more semester for the Advanced EMT certificate. Students who complete the Advanced EMT certificate are then eligible to apply for the Paramedic certificate option, which begins classes in the summer semester and utilizes shift-based scheduling providing EMTs currently working in the field access to classes without losing time from work. An associate degree option is also available through the EMS program.

Openings for both the Basic EMT and Advanced options also remain for the Fall 2023 semester, with classes beginning Aug. 18.

Child Development

The Child Development program accepts applications from Aug. 1-Nov. 1 for students wishing to earn credentials and/or a degree required to work with children in state-funded education programs. The program offers four short-term certificates in Child Development, Infant/Toddler, Preschool/Family Child Care and Early Childhood Education, each of which can be earned in one semester, and each can be used toward an associate degree.

Funding assistance is available through scholarships for those currently working in the childcare field and through apprenticeship opportunities. The program also has a transfer agreement with Athens State University for students interested in continuing their education to work on a bachelor’s degree.

Students can start taking Child Development courses during any semester, with classes available this fall starting Aug. 18.
