Volleyball, Cross Country move up in polls
Hanceville, AL — Wallace State Community College Volleyball has moved up to first place in the North division of the Alabama Community College Conference rankings and up to 14 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll.
The Lions have a 31-3 overall record for the season and are 8-0 against conference opponents. They will play their final home games of the season on Sunday, Oct. 22, with matches starting at noon against conference opponents Calhoun Community College and Snead State Community College. Sophomore players will be recognized before the first game.
Two Lady Lions have earned ACCC Players of the Week honors during the last two weeks, with sophomore’s Anna Claire Hutto of Moulton and Braelee Quinn of Logan earning the honors for the weeks of Oct. 10 and Oct. 17, respectively.
Cross Country teams move up in national polls
The Wallace State Cross Country teams also moved up in the national polls. The women’s team moved up one spot to fourth in the nation in the NJCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll for Week 3, while the men also gained a spot to move up to sixth in the nation in the men’s poll.
Freshman runner Claire Deaton of Madison on the women’s team earned her third selection of the season as ACCC Runner of the Week for the week of Oct. 9.
The men’s team finished 18th in their most recent race at the UAH Chargers XC Invitational, while the women finished 24th. The teams next run at the Alabama Community College Region XXII Championship on Friday, Oct. 27 at John Hunt Running Park in Huntsville.
Women’s Golf place second at home tournament
The Wallace State Women’s golf team took a hard loss at the Wallace State Fall Invitational on their home turf at Cross Creek Golf Course. The team came in second and 23 strokes behind tournament champion East Florida State.
Sophomores Aidan Haithcock and Sydney Epps each finished in the top 10, with Haithcock, of Homewood, coming in fifth place and Epps, of Water Valley, MS, following in sixth place. The team next competes at the Southern Union Women’s Fall Classic Nov. 11-13 in Montgomery.
