Athletics Roundup: Wallace State Men’s Golf Earns Runner-Up Finish at Calhoun Fall Invitational; Volleyball Sweeps Lawson State; Lindeman and Mecklenburg named ACCC Players of the Week
Hanceville, AL — The Wallace State Men’s Golf team continued their strong season with a second-place finish at the Calhoun Fall Invitational, hosted by Calhoun Community College at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, on Oct. 6-8.
Wallace State battled through three rounds to secure their runner-up spot in a competitive field of 11 teams, posting a total score of +15. The Lions shot an impressive -2 in the opening round, followed by +7 and +10 in rounds two and three, respectively.
Sophomore Cole Lindeman of Priceville led the charge for Wallace State, finishing first overall with a stellar performance, shooting -4 for the tournament. Lindeman's consistency was on display throughout, as he posted an even-par 72 in the first round and finished with back-to-back rounds of -2.
Freshman Tristan Tidemann of Chanhassen, Minn., and sophomore Sam Mitchell of Pottstown, Pa., both put together strong showings, each shooting +6 overall to finish tied for seventh place. Tidemann opened the tournament with an impressive -2 in the first round and bounced back in round three with a -1, while Mitchell maintained steady form with a -2 in round one and finished the weekend strong.
Sophomore Nick Cook of Enterprise finished 16th overall, shooting +9 for the tournament. Cook's best round came in round two, where he posted a -1, helping keep the Lions in contention.
Rounding out the team’s efforts, freshman Dylan Hunt of Essex, U.K., contributed with rounds of +6, +7, and +11.
Lindeman Earns ACCC Men’s Golf Player of the Week Honors
This week, Lindeman was named as the Men’s Golf Player of the Week by the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) for his third-place finish at the Chuck Kalanick Memorial Tournament. Lindeman posted a three-round total of -2, helping lead the Lions to a second-place overall finish.
Wallace State will next compete at the Turtle Point Invitational, an NCAA Division I tournament hosted by the University of North Alabama, at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen on Oct. 13-15.
Wallace State Volleyball Sweeps Lawson State
The Wallace State Volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Lawson State Community College on Oct. 9, with set scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18. The Lady Lions delivered a balanced attack, with multiple players making key contributions.
Sophomore Chloe Jackson of Athens led the team with 12 kills and two service aces, while freshman Amanda Monge of Davenport, Fla., added 11 kills, 10 digs and one block. Freshman Rachel Mecklenburg of Madison recorded six kills, seven digs, 16 assists and one block, providing solid play both offensively and defensively. Freshman Molly Shiflett of Corner contributed six kills, four digs, one assist and four aces to round out the attack.
Freshman Ali Price of Rainsville tallied 15 assists and two digs. Freshman Abby McDonald of Fairview recorded eight digs, four assists, one kill and two aces. Sophomore April Burgess of Alabaster and freshman Kailey Dickerson of Wellington each added one kill, with Burgess also contributing two digs.
Mecklenburg Earns ACCC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week Honors
This week, Mecklenburg was named as the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week by the ACCC for her outstanding performances. Mecklenburg tallied 61 kills (3.58 per set), 71 assists (4.17 per set), 10 aces, 48 digs and 12 blocks, making a significant impact on both sides of the net.
The team will next compete at the Snead State Invitational Tournament in Boaz on Oct. 12 and 13. They will face Northeast Mississippi Community College at 2 p.m. and Jones College at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by matches against Pearl River Community College at 11 a.m. and Walters State Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Wallace State Volleyball team is currently 25-8.
